Ghost mirror and black pumpkin as a pair

Pair a lit ghost mirror with a black terracotta jack-o'-lantern, and your mantel or entry table is dressed for Halloween in one move. The mirror shows a hidden candlelit ghost when you switch it on, and the 10 inch handmade pumpkin sits right in front of it.

Setup takes minutes. Plug in the mirror, set the pumpkin beside it, and the two form a small centerpiece on a console table, a shelf or an office desk. The mirror needs power, so place the set within reach of an outlet before you arrange the rest of your display.

The Ghost Mirror and Jack-O'-Lantern Set sits on the Halloween shelf of the Oriental Cherry seasonal lineup.

Before it goes up

Check the cord and the bulbs when it comes out of the box and again each season, and retire a set with a frayed cord. Keep lights that are meant for indoor use inside, do not chain more light sets together than the instructions allow, and switch it off when you go to bed or leave the house.

This is general information about decorating for the holidays, not safety advice for your home. The instructions in the box come first, local fire rules can be stricter, and anything with a plug, a battery or small parts deserves a look at the age and the label before it goes up.

What the safety sources say

Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control: NFPA tips to keep the holidays fire-safe. Use lights that carry the label of an independent testing laboratory, note that some lights are for indoor or outdoor use but not both, replace sets with worn or broken cords or loose connections, keep a tree at least three feet from any heat source and never let it block an exit.
